Written by the award winning authors Evan Trevane and Shawn M. Casey under the joint penname of T.C. Archer, Chain Reaction is a take on the old classic vampire tale but cleverly juxtaposed in a WW2 setting. Jordan Pierce is a former Chicago detective who now works as a security guard for the U.S. government protecting the Manhattan project. When a spy is detected and a scientist tortured on the project, he's called in to take charge of the investigation. There's a problem, however. He's beset by a mysterious disease attacking his body and thinks it's destroying him. He resigns himself to a gloomy existence until he notices the new girl on the team and prime suspect, scientist Gladys Anne Nichols, who gets him tangled up into the murder. She is over her head in a plot involving her half brother and the Nazis who supposedly hold him in exchange for some documents they want her to steal from the Manhattan project. Jordan discovers her complicity by accident and chases after her in order to stop her. The assignment for Pierce leads to chain of events that ultimately involve Winston Churchill and the Nazis.
If you check my Goodreads account you will see that I took 5 whole days to read this, but, in defense of being tagged a slow reader, I'd like to point out this time it was because of my lack of time to give this read the full attention it deserved. This book needs to be savored. In fact, this is one of the best WW2 books I have ever read because it uniquely combines two of my favorite genres: paranormal and history as well as a dash of alternate history. Now Gladys may be a pin-up girl who hides under the lab coat of a scientist, but she's not immune to love and her love is her main focus as she manages to do something that leads Jordan on a chase.
It's my pleasure to give this book 4 stars. The Phenom League (a mysterious organization that Jordan learns of and that another character, Ethel, is a member of) reminds me of the X-Men and Avengers—only better, and we have only just gotten started here. This is book one of the Phenom League series. The mysterious stranger Ethel, who is featured on the book's cover, seems to hold clues to the answers we seek along with the characters. Their next book in the series will be Desert Fox and concerns a mummy guarding a pharaoh when Rommel is marching across Egypt. Gotta love the history! This book and the series is a terrific combination of what we know and expect from the team of T.C Archer and I enjoyed it immensely.

For love of country and a woman, Jordan Pierce must sacrifice his humanity.
Former Chicago Detective Jordan Pierce put his life on hold in order to protect America’s secret weapon against the Nazis, The Manhattan Project. But he can’t protect himself as his humanity is eaten away by a mysterious disease that destroys him, while at the same time makes him more powerful than any man he’s ever known. Jordan finds out how much the disease has devoured his soul when he falls in love with the woman who might destroy America and tear apart his last shred of humanity.
